Also known as Kirasumi along Asian coastlines, the golden roe were first observed by European cultures when a shipwrecked sailor saw the golden roe sacs curing on tree branches in the Calusa villages that dotted the Gulf Coast of the early 1500s.
In Asian cultures it is prized for its flavor, and also as a powerful aphrodisiac.
